Release: Create, Edit and Delete Impact, Improved Events and More

Posted by Cameron Booth on June 23, 2008 – 12:27 pm

Wow…time sure flies when you’re having fun, and in our case, working hard too! Over the weekend we released a few changes, which we’re excited to announce.

First off, creating impact is core to what we do here on Zazengo. Now, it’s easier than ever to enter an impact. We’ve added a Create an Impact link to every page.

But nobody’s perfect, so we’ve added the ability to edit and delete an impact you’ve already entered on your My Impact page.

And finally, we’ve improved the Events interface making it easier for you to enter and find the latest happenings on your projects.

But to say that was all we’ve done wouldn’t be fair. We fixed over 60 reported bugs (thanks for all the great feedback), and countless other bugs we noticed along the way.

Here’s a short list:

  • Improved the titles on each page for better search engine optimization.
  • Fixed countless javascript and styling errors in Internet Explorer.
  • Adjusted the project search results; pushing the most relevant projects to the top.
  • Improved the reporting functionality for organizations.
  • Fixed a few bugs that were causing incorrect impact totals.

While we still have lots to do, we are very excited about what’s to come in the next couple months. Stay tuned for some exciting new announcements. Our goal is to make Zazengo the best place to track and manage impact!

National Conference on Service and Volunteering

Posted by Vicki Saunders on June 1, 2008 – 3:47 pm

We’ve got a booth set up in the exhibit area at the conference. Come by and see us if you are participating at the conference.

Today Points of Light Institute and Hands On Network new branding was launched at the kickoff. I’ve been involved with Hands On over the past couple of years helping with their strategic plan and working on BeHandsOn. We’re excited to be starting a project with Hands On Bay Area.

We met a lot of cool people today at the conference and the opening session was fantastic.

Improved Zazengo Navigation

Posted by Cameron Booth on May 19, 2008 – 2:20 pm

I’m happy to announce that we went live with a new site release last night. The biggest new feature is much simpler navigation. For a while, we’ve known our navigation has needed some work, and we’ve put our heads together to improve things.

The headline?

Our top level navigation has changed — we think for the better.

You is now the area with everything about you in it. For starters, it’s your dashboard, where you can get a birds eye view of what’s going on in your Zazengo world. When you want to branch out and start to make an impact, the Create tab is where you can create an impact, or start a project to inspire others to create an impact themselves. Finally, we’ve got lots of good stuff on the site, and you’ll find it under the Explore tab. That’s where you’ll find other projects going on, organizations on the site, and even other users who can help you in your own projects.

This is only the beginning of where we’re going with our navigation, and functionality, but we thought it was important enough to get out there for you to use now.

That’s not the only thing we did with this release though. We think we’ve significantly improved the registration experience for people who are new to Zazengo. Our Learn More page is now much more explanatory, as is our new home page.

As always, your feedback is very important, please keep it coming!

Release: Impact Entry, Help and Other Updates

Posted by Cameron Booth on May 16, 2008 – 9:10 am

Hello Zazengoers!

Wanted to quickly introduce myself – I’m Cameron Booth, the Development Lead for Zazengo, managing our small band of merry Ruby on Rails programmers as we build out the Zazengo site.

Today I’m happy to give you some insight the new features we released recently. It’s exciting to see our system improve on a daily basis.

Help and feedback

We’ve improved our help system. In addition to our Frequently Asked Questions, we’ve incorporated a tool called GetSatisfaction that lets you interact with us and other Zazengo users. We want your feedback to help us make Zazengo better.

Impact Entry

For the first time now you can add your own personal impact to the system. Along with this, we’ve made some design improvements to the impact profile pages. (include URL) For an example, check out what our community manager Steph has been up to lately.

Invite your Friends

Look in one of your projects, under “invite friends”, you’ll find the new invitation tool. Just type in their email address or look them up by name.

Now, you don’t have to join the project to attend an event

You can also invite your friends to the event.

Improvements for Organizations – Organization Admins

We’ve made a lot of smaller improvements for our organization admins including:

  • You can now get your own widget to put on your org’s site. Click the “Get your Widget” in your “Manage Org” control panel
  • You can opt to receive copies of the “contact us” and “feedback emails” that people submit when they’re using your site.
  • You can also personalize the welcome emails to your new users.
  • We’ve added an RSS feed so that you will know when new members register in your organization. The link is near the bottom of your main profile page. We will be adding to the RSS feed soon.

Lots more added, and more to come

That’s only a very short list of all the work we’ve been doing lately. We’ve been fixing lots of bugs, making things look better, and more importantly act smoother. Keep coming back here, I’ll make sure to announce new features as we launch them.

And please let us know what you think, OK?

We’re making this site to enable you to track, manage, and share your impact with the world!

Malaria Engage

Posted by Vicki Saunders on May 13, 2008 – 3:39 pm

We had a great launch with MalariaEngage (malariaengage.zazengo.com) on Zazengo last week for World Malaria Day.

Here are some links to articles about the initiative:

Tom Hadfield and I met with Ray Chambers. The Secretary General of the United Nations appointed Ray as the Special Envoy for Malaria. They announced recently a plan to cover all 600 million people at risk in Africa with nets and make the right medication available to them.

MalariaEngage is planning on rolling out their efforts to include more research partners and to grow the field of awareness and support.

Zazengo Features

Posted by Vicki Saunders on May 2, 2008 – 9:25 am

Version 1.0 of Zazengo focuses on tools for self-organizing and basic impact tracking.

When you create a project you have at your fingertips, events, discussions, action items, stories, teammates and an invite and messaging system.

  • You can create events and invite people to attend and see who’s confirmed.
  • With the action items feature you can assign an action to anyone on the team and set the priority and track what’s getting done.
  • You can also create discussions and add stories with embedded videos or pictures for tracking the anecdotal impact of your actions.
  • Anyone who starts a project can identify what impact they want to track. You can add any metric you want. We’ve got a few impacts identified and our goal is to have the community identify what it is you want to track versus define the fields ourselves.

When you edit your profile you can identify what you are good at and what you care about (edit profile: skills, interests) and then we suggest projects to you on your personal start page.

Through search you can find people, projects and organizations in your community by interests or skills.

As an organization you can track the collective impact of all your members. We have created basic reporting tools and administrative features for you to set permissions, brand your organization and create customized widgets and landing pages that best represent your mission and goals.

We have some exciting additions coming in version 2.0 in June. A more robust recommendation engine, a deeper impact tracking and reporting system and a visualization engine that will give each user the opportunity to visually represent their impact.

We have a lot of ideas brewing and new features coming and we really want your input. What’s missing? What features would be useful for you. We welcome your feedback and are committed to co-creating Zazengo with you.

Zazengo: The Quickest Path to Action

Posted by Vicki Saunders on April 28, 2008 – 8:14 pm

Flower

The idea for this platform has been brewing for a few years and finally, market timing helped it get pushed into action.

The three main reasons for building Zazengo stem from my learning about engagement strategies, the need for a common platform for the social sector and thirdly, the creation a market for social action.

Engagement 2.0

For the past 12 years I’ve been in meeting after meeting being asked by governments, corporations, NGOs, small companies, schools, parents, the same question:

How do you get young people engaged in “x”.

It doesn’t really matter what the issue is, someone, somewhere thinks you should be engaged in it. From the environment to water saving to cleaning up trails in the forest to empathy for others, you name it, we’ve got people trying to get more action in their area of interest.

How do you get young people interested in, for example, ‘their community’. At the beginning, I really engaged with these questions and created all kinds of programs and initiatives and curriculum. I experimented over the past decade with hundreds of different ways to engage people in whatever challenge someone else thought they should be engaged in.

Over time I realized: People are already engaged.

There is a wealth of activity and action and solving and experimenting going on all over the world, we just can’t see it because it’s small, diverse, and not connected.

And most organizations sit around a big board room table making up lists of things for people to do to get engaged and then they get stuck with the same three things: ask for money, protest or write a letter to a politician. In fact, it became so prevalent that these are now considered to be engagement strategies.

I think there are thousands more ways to get people engaged and it all starts with one thing – asking people what they are doing, followed by giving them the tools to tell you what they’re up to and finally, tracking the impact and feeding it back to the whole ecosystem.

Common platform

I also noticed that organization after organization were applying to get grants to build the same set of tools over and over for their communities and the question came up: what if we could build a common platform that could be shared across communities that allowed for individualized branding that was free for these exceptional non-profits. So we built our best version 1.0 with a number of leading non-profits, thinkers and activists. Now we are ready to open it up to co-create the next versions with your input.

Market for social action

And, last but not least came the question of a market for social action. Non-profits are completely reliant on donations. My firm belief is that all of this action has a huge value to society and it feels like the time is now to bring sponsors into the mix to create a whole new market for social action. Zazengo shares 50% of it’s revenues with the organizations who track their impact on our platform.

Zazengo is our way of connecting the small, and big, amazing, innovative, simple, everyday acts people take to improve their lives or follow their passion or attempt to just make some sanity out of what they see around them.

On a personal note, Zazengo is a way for me to track the things I do (mentoring and volunteering my time to new startups) and realize that all these little things add up. I used to say, “I don’t volunteer” because I had some preconceived notion of what volunteering was. Now I know better. I’m contributing all the time and the act of tracking it makes me realize the value I bring to this world. My little actions matter.

Welcome to Zazengo!
